There are quite a few disadvantages if one wants to use geodesic dome structure as a home and Lloyd Kahn, had listed many of them. Most of these disadvantages of geodesic dome is related to building a geodesic home. I got curious and asked what if it is small dome like SmartDome and not used for living.
Two major disadvantage listed by most of the people who tried to build them are “too many joints” and “difficulty to make them water proof” if your waterproof cover is not provided. Too many joints means maintaining the structural integrity becomes a difficult task. Geodesic domes which derive their strength from the triangular elements that are structurally rigid and distribute the structural stress throughout the structure. Any weakness in the joints weakens the whole structure.
